About 11 billion cost of formula and breast milk substitutes,Thailand

Can you believe, about 11 billion ฿ was spend on formula or breastmilk substitue while the doctor say BREASTMILK IS BEST for our baby.

Spurned milk sparks outcry:Doctors say the breast is best for infants but marketing pushes unhealthy choices

However, in Thailand, exclusive breastfeeding during a child's first six months is still as low as 5% among the 800,000 newborn babies each year.
A recent report showed that more than 400,000 newborns are given breast milk substitutes. Such high consumption is driven by the highly competitive market and big public relations campaigns.
Milk formula commercials, complimentary samples and gift distribution can be seen in drug stores, hospitals, clinics and department stores.
The amount of formula and breast milk substitutes in the country costs about 11 billion baht a year and market growth is 2 to 5%, according to the Department of Internal Trade.
"Promotion of breast milk substitutes undermines breastfeeding," said David Clark, nutritional specialist at the United Nations Children's Fund, during a recent Unicef meeting in Manila on infant and young child feeding in emergencies.
Global sales of baby food are projected to grow by 37% from US$11.5 billion (349 billion baht) to US$42.7 billion by 2013. Almost two-thirds of this growth will come from the Asia-Pacific, particularly China and Indonesia.

The Different between primary care and primary health care

The difference between primary care and primary health care

Primary care is the basic care given to an individual/client in case of a disease or illness. This care consist of the basic procedures or drugs to be used with the basic management of that particular illness or disease before one steps up to further management or use of stronger drugs or use of alternative method of treatment. In primary care its what one can do to the client first.

- Primary health care is health care given to the primary level of service, that is level 2-1 of health system. Primary health care mainly deals with pro motive and preventive measures to control or prevent a situation in health care. At this level of care we mainly deal with health education, demonstration and social behavior change for the clients to develop positive health care behavior to promote health and avoid development of diseases or complications. This is the level where community strategy has been concentrated on by use of community members in health care. Primary health care was adopted in  Al-Matta but it has not worked well because of non defined methods of its implementation with parallel programs being developed. With integration of programs and defined methods  i think primary health care is best suited to achieve health for all.

Epidurals-Real risk for both mothers&babies. by Dr.Sarah Buckley

Many women have a good experience with epidurals. Sometimes the relief from pain can allow a woman to rest and relax sufficiently to go on and have a good birth experience. However deciding to use an epidural for pain relief can also lead to a "cascade of intervention", where an otherwise normal birth becomes highly medicalised, and a woman feels that she loses her control and autonomy. Often the decision to accept an epidural is made without an awareness of these, and other, significant risks to both mother and baby.more....at http://www.birthinternational.com/articles/birth-intervention/134-epidurals-real-risks-for-mothers-and-babies

Maternal&Child health issue in G8/G20 meeting

In the runup to the G8 and G20 Summits, which it hosted during the last week of June, the Canadian government declared that maternal and child health would be a central focus of the agenda, particularly for the G8. FCI was one of the few international health NGOs that was on the scene in Toronto for these historic meetings, culminating months of advocacy work to ensure that this would be more than just a symbolic step — that the world leaders’ discussion would lead to concrete financial commitments, and that governments will be held accountable for delivering on these commitments. Amy Boldosser, FCI senior advocacy officer, kept colleagues abreast of developments throughout the weekend on Twitter and Facebook, blogged on RH Reality Check and the Blog 4 Global Health, and provided this summary of the summits’ results:

The protestors clashing with police got all the press, but the summits brought important developments for maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS, and reproductive health as well. The G8 released the details of its Muskoka Initiative for Maternal and Child Health on Saturday, a five-year, $7.3 billion package for improving maternal, newborn, and child health and increasing access to reproductive health. It is estimated that at least $20 billion is needed to reach the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) targets for reduction in maternal and child mortality and reproductive health access by 2015. The Muskoka Initiative doesn’t come close to meeting that $20 billion shortfall, but it is an important start.

The UN Secretary-General has launched a Joint Action Plan to Improve the Health of Women and Children, and governments will be asked to make additional commitments to achieve the MDGs by 2015 at the September 2010 UN High-Level Plenary Meeting on the MDGs. The leaders at the G8 and G20 helped put maternal and child health on the map at this critical time, but simply raising awareness is not enough.
While the funds committed may not have been all we hoped for, there were some pleasant surprises in the communiqué details...
